I may end up really liking this company I'm working with.
I just had my review - they had to stop it in the middle for another meeting, but it's done now. It took an hour and a half, all told.
I'm pretty comfortable with review styles here. I have to deal with the money side of things with one of the partners, so that will happen next week (I hope) or the week after. I did check, though, and they said the partners are fair, as long as the money is available from the clients. So I will present my case, and we'll see what happens.
It was very positive. There wasn't a lot of "things to improve" that I didn't know, in fact they said 1) be less sensitive and 2) keep working on following the templates (but they admitted that was from old information, because later they said that I always apply feedback and am doing terrific in my testplans). They also said I was quite aggressive when I started, but that I've relaxed quite a bit since coming here.
I can see that. I blamed it on living in Ontario and the States. ;) but we all know it's just my fault. I can be pretty uptight and weird. I hope I've put that behind me for now, though.
I do like the way things are done at this company, i.e. it's a very open, non-hierarchical company, so someone who is a lead on one project may not be a lead on another, and so on.
You see, I like leading - but not all the time. Optimally, I like taking breaks from leading to just test for awhile.
They agree with me that I'd make a good lead (well DUH! :P), and are going to work with me to get me up to speed on things, i.e. knowing the application better. So that's very positive.
They said a lot of good things about my work, about feedback they've received from the client, from a peer, and etc. They were very positive, so I'm feeling much better about my role here - that is, that my perceived role here is very close to their perception of my role here. (I think it was the fact that my perception and their perception could have been very different, that had me so anxious - you'd think that couldn't happen, but your mother isn't my mother, and you haven't worked where I've worked, nor had the 'friends' I've had...)
So I know I was very worried about working here, when I first started. About fitting in and stuff. But they want me to feel secure and comfortable here (their words!), and they have this open non-hierarchy going on, and everything. It was a very rewarding conversation.
As long as they have work for me, and we can renegotiate a slightly higher hourly wage, I could absolutely see myself working here for a couple more years.
What a positive experience!

Date: 2004-01-09 06:42 pm (UTC)Good for you! That's about the best you can hope for in a job.
yay!
Date: 2004-01-10 12:44 am (UTC)my one coworker had to take off time for a bad knee once. in her review, she got a salary cut b/c she took off time and not because of her work and nothing fell apart while she took time to get herself together. considering we don't have national health care and medical care doesn't come cheap, having a pay cut b/c you try to use your freaking medical sucks. i think ppl seem to be more aggressive in the usa from what i can tell, but sometimes i think it's a reactive measure from what we have to deal with from companies too.
i'm glad things are working out well for you; this sounds like a very positive environment for you :O)

Date: 2004-01-10 11:41 pm (UTC)It'll be another 6 month contract, although the contract with the client goes for another year, so I know I'll have another 6 month contract after that. It's relieving.
Congrats...
