african violet takes a dive... news at 11
May. 12th, 2004 10:34 amLast night we went to Andrew's grandparents for dinner. Nice people.
His grandma did the dessert thing again. No-one believes us when we tell them what she does, but she goes crazy with desserts. This time, she made 2 different types of tarts, some squares, and "oh yes, I have lemon meringue pie in the fridge too".
Heh.
Anyway, it was a pleasant get together. His grandfather doesn't hear very well, so at the dinner table, we were able to converse with him (and even so, he often jumped in with stories that didn't relate to the conversation at hand), but once we moved to the living room, he wasn't really a part of the conversation - even though I spoke loudly and clearly, and spoke facing him so he could see my mouth move.
It was pleasant. I'd like to spend more time with them. I've never really had that sort of relationship with my grandparents, mostly because my mother doesn't like them, and treats every visit as a responsibility, a chore to be completed and rewarded afterwards. Not a good way to grown into spending time with your grandparents, I guess.
So yeah. I find myself wanting to offer for Andrew to fix up their cupboard doors, planning on bringing them lots of fruit once we go strawberry picking, and etc.
I like it.
His grandmother gave me a gorgeous African Violet to take home. A happy plant, it had obviously been well cared for, and had blooms and buds everywhere, and TONS of new leaves.
I carried it most carefully to the bus stop, held it on the bus, and as we were walking from the bus to the skytrain, this HORRIBLE FUCKING WENCH WALKING IN FRONT OF ME FLUNG OUT HER ARM AND HIT THE PLANT, making it fall out of my hands, separate itself from its pot, and fall face down onto the concrete, losing half its buds and leaves.
I was crushed. Crushed!
And then I felt bad for being so crushed, because it IS only a plant, after all.
But it was my new toy! Brand new and shiny, and then it wasn't. :(
We don't have any potting soil right now, so we went into the gardens at our complex once we got home, and got some dirt to replace the missing dirt from the fall. We watered it, and I do hope it will be ok. It has 2 blooms left, and a couple of buds. If that's all I get this year, next year should be ok.
My work friend just invited me to her apartment on Saturday. Plans are to sew my dress (she thinks we'll get it all or mostly done), go swimming (!!!), and just hang out. Huzzah!!!
Woohoo!!
I'm very excited about the whole thing.
Plus, that will be the day after Andrew leaves. It will help me not feel so lonely - start the time off with a good experience.
I miss him already!

Date: 2004-05-12 11:30 am (UTC)As for the african violet, that is very sad :( Luckily, you won't have to wait until next year for more blooms, they bloom constantly. Keep it in a self-watering pot in a sunny window and I'm willing to bet it'll be full of buds in a few weeks.
