ooooohhh last night was fun, fun!!

Went over to zaftigvegan's place for a sangria and tapas party, and it was really great fun, so fantastic. I mean, even though my tummy hurt and I was tired and for a little while, overwhelmed with all the people... it was just the shiznit. Most awesome.

I totally wimped out and we left a little after 11, and I WOULD have stayed longer, but, you know, my tummy, being tired, freaking WORK today...

So yeah.

And I've got to tell you, I'm meeting all these extraordinarily gorgeous people, who have insides that are as gorgeous as their outsides... I mean, zaftigvegan, aibrean_owl... *sigh* I'm jealous.

Anyway. Enough of that.

So there was a really yummy time had by all, or at least, had by ME, and Andrew had a good time too, and the rest of them SEEEEEEMMED to be enjoying themselves... heh.

Heh.

My tummy is FINE today.

Tomorrow I've been given the opportunity to take the day off work. The office in Pittsburgh is moving all the servers, so we won't have a lot to do. So I'm going to take an earlier bus to Kelowna, and spend even MORE time with Andrew's family (oh joy, oh bliss). The good part of that, of course, is that his mother and I will have more time to can and make jam.

EEEEE!!

And, I love how this stuff works, Andrew called me from the thrift store yesterday and said that a canning pot with all the wires and everything came into the store, and did I want it???

I said HELL YA!!

We find out today how much his boss will charge him for it. Dude. Everyone's getting canned goods for Christmas/Solstice.

Actually, this is all new to me. My mother canned when I was growing up, but I can only sort of fuzzily remember that she had a pot with wires to hold the jars away from the bottom and stuff like that. My impression was that the canning works better (more even heating) if they aren't touching the pot... but that's just my conjecture.

Andrew's mom has one similar, and I guess that's what he saw at the store. I still haven't seen it, but I will ask her this weekend about why a canning pot is used, and I'll let you know. :)

Ok, here's the low-down:

By having a pot with wires, you can put the jars in the wire, then lower the whole thing down - so you don't get burned. Also, the jars don't bobble around in the pot and so less of them crack/break, and taking them out is that much easier too.

So, let me know how that works...my mother and Yaya used to can, when I was a kid. All I really remember was the kitchen was always really warm, there were jars all over the place and pots bubblin'.

Oh ya and the Raspberry and Strawberry jams were the best...

It was wonderful! The kitchen DID get plenty warm... but man, those jams are so good. I also succeeded in making sugar-free jams, so that makes me happy.

One of my all-time favourites is blueberry jam. Yum!

Oh Oh!!! I really really want to can more as well. My MIL taught me how to can pickles when I was big and pregnant with ZZ on one of the hottest days of the year (but it was so worth it) and I've canned salsa and applesauce before. But I don't have a canner. IF Andrew ever spies another come into the thrift store, please tell me!! :)
