In soviet russia, walnuts eat YOU
Aug. 20th, 2004 09:57 amOk, I know I post about food a lot, but d00d.
We been eatin GOOD.
Last night I made two kinds of pesto - one with basil, garlic, nutritional yeast, miso, and pine nuts (and a bit of oil), and the other with basil, sun dried tomatoes, garlic, walnuts, and oil.
I quickly cooked up some pasta and green beans, and then fried up some fake shrimp in margarine, garlic, and dried chilies, and we both kinda divided our pasta in half and tried both of the pestos.
MAN!
YUM!
HOORAY!
YES!
PESTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:D
So yeah, dinner was good, with iced tea made from mint leaves and apple juice.
:D
After dinner, I made a walnut bulgar green bean pilaf for lunches. I wasn't too sure if I'd like it (plus, for some reason, the damn beans wouldn't cook), but it turned out teh yum. It's even good cold. Very peppery. Do you think that has anything to do with the fact that I added lots of fresh pepper?? :P
So the other day Andrew brought home a couple of movies from the thrift store. One was "Rescue from Gilligan Island". I thought I'd seen it, I thought for SURE I'd seen it! So we figured we'd watch it last night.
Um.
Don't ever watch that movie.
It's not bad.
It's worse than bad.
Heh.
The best part is the "bad russians" running around and trying to catch Gilligan, and their wonderful fake accents. We had good giggles over those.

Date: 2004-08-20 01:39 pm (UTC)Also, I have a couple of websites I like for completely animal free eating - www.theppk.com, www.veganmania.com are two, and I've eaten several things from there.
What sorts of things do you have trouble finding? Is there a Whole Foods or Wild Oats in Austin?
AND
If you tell me things you like to eat, I'll send you recipes you might like. :)

Date: 2004-08-20 01:49 pm (UTC)We do have a Whole Foods here but they don't carry a lot of the dried fake meat products. I've never even heard of the fake shrimp before.
I think it's just further proof that some countries(like Canada and some of the European countries) are so far ahead of the US when it comes to accepting and embracing a healthier way of eating that doesn't include meat.

Date: 2004-08-20 01:58 pm (UTC)The fake shrimp and stuff I find mostly at asian stores. Is there a china town in Austin? I was there once 10 years ago, and didn't really get far away from the women's university, so I'm a little hazy on that. It might be worth trying some of the bigger chinese stores there.
I agree with you about the US being a bit behind in the healthier eating category. Certainly, part of it is because of the huge beef and milk industry, and we all know money is more important than anything (sigh).
Maybe I can mail you some frozen stuff? Hmmmm
