my violet, and shopping
Mar. 27th, 2005 08:09 amMy African Violet has buds!!!! YAY!!!
I don't know if anyone recalls, but last year Andrew's grandmother gave me an african violet. On the way home, a woman flung her arm out and hit my brand newtoy plant and it tumbled down to the ground, face down, and lost all it's flowers and bruised most of it's leaves.
Well since then I have a) called it stumpy and b) coddled the poor thing and put it in a choice position. It's now doing a LOT better. It's got tons of new leaves, it's very happy. It's really reaching towards the sun, which is odd, given it's positioning (right by a window), but it's happy, so, whatever (although if anyone knows why, I'd be happy to learn). But no flowers. I've been doing a little reading up on it, and one book I have says that African Violets may not flower for quite some time after being moved, and since this particular move was very traumatic, I thought, sure, ok, that may be it.
But I was out shopping yesterday, and I picked up some African Violet food. I thought, well... it's been through a lot, maybe it needs a little help.
Then last night we were at Andrew's grandparents place, so I asked his Grandmother how she cares for them and etc, and she was showing me hers, and I saw little buds on one, and I said "oh no, I don't even have buds on mine"...
But then I went home and YES! There ARE!!! I am SO HAPPY. I'm going to have flowers soon!!! And I can put the shameful food away for later. Heh.
So I'm feeling better. I took a LOT of ibuprofen yesterday, but I've now been up for an hour, and I don't feel bad at all. I'll try to take it easy today (AND I'll keep my trusty pills with me just in case) but I think I've gone through the worst of it.
Also, yesterday after talking to Cam about my contract work, and getting some great feedback from him, I finished IceWind Dale I (FINALLY), then I took a nice long bath, then I used the awesome thumper Andrew got me a couple of years ago (that is not a euphemism - it's one of the best electric massagers I've seen - it's big and thumpy. Only problem is that it's a little heavy... but you can even set it to a HEAT setting!!!), and did as much of my back and sides as I could reach, and my legs and stuff too. So I felt great.
Then, since we were getting picked up at 5:30 from the mall where Andrew works, I went in a few hours early to do some shopping for a couple of packages I'll send out.
I have a confession to make.
I went shopping.
And I ENJOYED IT.
*gasps*
I know, I know. Next thing you know I'll be trying to keep up with the Joneses. Ha. Ha. Although actually, to be fair, almost everything I bought was for someone else. I did buy myself a decorating book that was on clearance for $7.50, though.
Anyway, I got lots of cool stuff, and then we went on our merry way to the Grandparents place.
It was a pleasant evening! And we were home before 10. Had a lovely conversation with his mom on the way home, about living the simple life.
Today, brunch with the family, then Andrew and I are going to Fabricland. I'm going to get some fabric for my quilt!!! YAY. Also, quilt batting, since it's on sale this month.

Date: 2005-03-27 05:27 pm (UTC)Combine that with the fact that neither my school nor my apartment building recycles anything and I'm doing some serious damage this year.
One more reason why I can't wait to get this over with and go home!

Date: 2005-03-27 04:54 pm (UTC)So glad to hear you felt better and could go to dinner :)
What are the plans for moving into a new apt? Buying a place? I know you wanted to work down your debt before buying, but you had some plans of getting a bigger place if you could find one in your pricerange.. is that still out there? You've mentioned decorating a couple of times, so that makes me wonder :)

Date: 2005-03-27 05:28 pm (UTC)Nowadays, I seem to just look at decorating books to help me with daydreaming. It's fun, but no stress to find a place right away. I actually was thinking just yesterday that we don't walk around looking for places for sale any more. It's good to be calm right now, I think. But stay tuned!

Date: 2005-03-27 08:12 pm (UTC)Before we built this house, i would kill every plant i took home.
Now that we have alot of light, they are so much happier.
As soon as its nice out, it's definately time for repotting:)All of my plants need more soil.
And maybe i need to purchase a few more. Does Micheals sell house plants?

Date: 2005-03-27 10:46 pm (UTC)African violets are so wonderful, and easy to care for. Soon, you'll be rooting new ones from this one and you'll have many new toys!!! But, like the book said, they do NOT like being moved. Keep it in the same place unless you have to move it.
