Well, WE had a lot of excitement on Friday night.
It seems we had a mouse.
We were sitting on the couch, unwinding a bit before bed, and Andrew looked down and said "oh, we have a mouse!" and I looked, but I didn't see it because at that exact moment Penelope jumped off Andrew's lap and went for the mouse.
It got away, though.
Both cats went on the prowl, looking for it, but after no more than 2 minutes they were both snooping around under the coffee table. I flipped up the cd box cover looking for it myself, and dislodged the mouse, which was off like a shot, both cats after it.
Bear, the mighty hunter who has never caught anything but squirrel fur, won out!!
He caught a mouse!
He killed it right off, but he didn't eat it. He just started playing with it the way he plays with his fake mice. I don't think he'd know HOW to eat it, if he did. Daddy Long Legs? Sure. Bees? Sure. But not mice.
Anyway, I was super proud of my baby bear, but did NOT want to find dead mouse in strange place in the morning. After about 10 minutes of him playing with it, throwing it up and catching it, pawing it, nudging it, etc, Andrew grabbed it and threw it outside.
Heh.
This morning the cats were STILL prowling around looking for more mice...
We don't need traps, we've got the cats. RAWR!

Date: 2005-07-02 06:39 pm (UTC)My friend had a brand new baby boa constrictor and we were getting worried that it wouldn't eat bugs or anything. We'd even gone out and gotten some tiny mice for it, but it just ignored them. The little mice grew up to be bigger mice and... one night they got out of their cage. She lived in an apartment and had no cats to save the day, and was too squeamish to put out traps. So, the mousing fell to me. We knew they were in the kitchen... probably behind the under-counter cabinets and that they were able to get onto the counter, etc. from there. So, 2AM in the kitchen... I'm sitting naked in the centre of it for seemingly ages. I have one empty hand and one hand with a tupperware container of suitable size. I got the first one that night and the second one the next night. The mighty hunter conquers! ;-).
P.S. Both the mice lived to ripe old ages...
We don't need traps, we've got the cats.
Which is actually why cats (as we know them today) exist. Because early humans developed a symbiotic relationship with them and bred them for their mousing (or ratting or whatever) abilities. In return, humans that were able to adapt as a symbiote were conveyed an evolutionary advantage through a reduction in disease within their family...
