So, the kittens have fleas.
Last night, we treated them, closed them in a room, and did a massive cleaning of the apartment.
30 minutes later, Bear threw up. A lot.
It had a hairball in it, but didn't SOUND like a hairball coming up.
So of course, I go into full on worry mode. Did he groom the Pe and get too much in his tummy?? Thinks I.
Of course, then he went directly over to his food bowl and started to eat. (Translation: Don't worry mama, I'm fine!)
So we decided to keep the bedroom door open overnight so we could watch him in case there was any further trauma. There wasn't, gladly, although of course there was the "Stop climbing on my head, Bear" and "Don't sleep on mama's chest when she's sleeping, Bear" situations we always have to go through when he's let into the bedroom.
I'm still worried, though. To say I'm distraught would be an overstatement, and dramatic - but I'm worried.
This morning Andrew is spraying the apartment with this spray he got, then he and the cats are going to hang out outside for an hour while it dries (I guess). Apparently it's toxic for that first hour. Tonight I hope to do a few loads of laundry, and with everything we've done, we hope this will do the trick.
My poor kitties.
They've never gotten fleas, or anything, before. I feel horrible.
So I'm worried - I worry that this spray is going to be bad for them, even after the hour. I worry that *I'm* going to be allergic to the spray. I worry that the fleas aren't going to all die and we're going to have to go through this all over again...
We're going to take them to a vet soon. They don't have a vet here in Vancouver, we never got one when we got here. It's been... 3 years, I think, since they've gone. More than time for a checkup. I didn't realize it had been that long.

Date: 2005-09-16 07:02 pm (UTC)the spray works and it didnt affect our (six at the time) cats at all. do your cats go outside? that's usually how they get fleas in the first place. we started using advantage on the cats and that seemed to do the trick (because tere was no way they would become indoor cats after a lifetime of freedom!).
Good luck to you and the kitties!

Date: 2005-09-16 07:26 pm (UTC)Well, Bear has escaped twice, but both times were quite a while before this infestation. We think we've caught it quite early, and neither one of us has seen a flea, either.
Andrew works in a pet store though, and comes into contact with a lot of animals (they don't sell animals, but customers bring them in often), and this year has been really bad for fleas. PLUS we have mice. For all I know, the mice brought in the fleas...

Date: 2005-09-17 01:47 am (UTC)They got so bad, so fast, that i would have little black specks all the way up to my thighs if i walked around in shorts. It made me really unhappy. I ended up treating the cat and using Borax swept into the carpet (it dehydrates fleas and their eggs) and vaccuumed up every day until i saw no more fleas (two weeks?). I hope to god i never have to go through that again.
That said: i would be distraught. It bothers me enough as it is when she kitty sneezes and coughs from her kitty asthma :/
