train wreck
Feb. 28th, 2003 08:25 amHave you seen that show "Are you hot or not?" We saw it last night briefly while we were looking for something to watch while stretching.
It's a train wreck. It's worse than that. It's a consensual trainwreck with viewers who pay to watch.
It's disgusting. Worse than pageants, it doesn't even pretend to care what you can do, what your plans for life are, or where you're from. It just wants to see your ass.
And there are JUDGES. Who tell you in no uncertain terms that your ass is flabby, your face is too long, your nose is too wide...
And the CONTESTANTS. The ones who are "not" cry backstage and on camera, the ones who are "hot" jump up and down and pump their fists in the air and say woohoo.
It's paralyzing. I felt like a deer caught in the headlights of media. I became nauseated.
I'm sure it's a metaphor for everything that's wrong with North American society right now, but I don't have any interest in continuing with it. I just want to wipe the memory of that horrific 15 minutes out of my head.
Standing at the bus stop today, I saw stickers, mostly removed, that said "Spy on Your Neighbour"
We had a most delicious dinner last night. Home-made mushroom and onion pizza, with creamy spinach salad. Mmmmmm.
We went to bed early. Our lives really have degenerated to me working, us working out, eating well, and sleep. That's the best way to reach my goals, though.
I finished American Gods last night. I ended up really liking it. Perhaps I didn't love it at the beginning because it was darker than at the end. Or something. After all, it does start in a "winter", and move on into a "spring" at the end. But after all, I'm glad I read it.

Most of the people they said were "not"...looked pretty good to me. I can't imagine what those judges would say if I went on that show.
They might as well call the show "Parade of Barbie and Ken dolls".

Date: 2003-02-28 12:16 pm (UTC)My friends all collect Sandman - I've read them all, either by borrowing them or from when I worked at the comic book store. They are, I think, some of Neil Gaiman's best stuff.

I also liked his Books of Magic stuff...my hubby and I are going to Megacon in Orlando this weekend. It's my first comic-y type event and I hope it's going to be fun.

Have fun at the comic con! That's awesome. I'm going to a sci-fi con in Toronto in September (if we end up moving back to that area). Geeks unite! huzzah!
