Near Death and Movies
May. 4th, 2003 09:24 amNear Death
We went to see the movie last night anyway. It wasn't nearly as windy as all the weather people said it would be, so we decided to take a chance.
I will talk about the movie shortly, however:
We biked home afterwards. It was 9:30, so it was dark, but we biked on a big street, which was well lit and well cared for, so it wasn't a problem.
Until we made a bad decision about which way to go at a corner. We could have turned right onto another big street and shortly come to the area we'd walked and biked many a time, or we could keep going straight to an area that we hadn't biked before.
We chose the new way.
The biking was fine. The people were not.
First a truck honked at us as we passed. That's fine, it's scary but it's happened before.
Then a car full of young men drove by and yelled at us.
THEN they turned into a corner store to turn around so they could yell at us "Get off the street, you fucking honkys!!"
THEN when we turned down another street to go towards home, ANOTHER car (it could possibly have been the same car, but it was dark so I couldn't tell) slowed down while passing and the people inside yelled "You're going to HELL"
I was so scared. Afterwards we agreed we will NEVER GO THERE AGAIN.
I just told my coworker and he said "You BIKED through the WARZONE???? At NIGHT????? On a SATURDAY???"
Jayzuz Christ. Never again.
The Movie
OhmigodOhmigodOhmigod.
The opening scene, with Nightcrawler, was INCREDIBLE. It was perfect. The way he moves, the way he fights, his prehensile tail... oh baby, oh baby oh baby I was SHAKING it was so good.
He's a bit more timid than comic book Nightcrawler, but that can change as time goes on.
The movie was great.
I still don't like Halle Berry as Storm. I STILL think Angela Bassett would have been incredible. She has the grace, the presence, and the strength to pull it off. I don't even think Halle is attractive. Well, she's not ugly, but she's not Ororo.
They really are working on the character development of Wolverine, and they did a great job. Jean Grey, too. Andrew kept saying "She's not going to be strong enough to do THAT." And I kept saying "baby, she turns into Dark Phoenix, she destroys a whole world, she can do little-old-THAT"
I am such a geek. I love it.
And I loved to see Colossus in his bit part, although he didn't sound all that Russian, and he should. He looked exactly right, and his steel was sexy. Oh YEAH.
I loved identifying where they got ideas from (oh, this happens in THESE comics, and that happened in THOSE comics), but it was it's own story, and it was really good.
I still miss Kitty Pryde, though. I wish they would do more with her than have her just obliquely referenced. She was so wonderful, in the comics. A big part of my growing up was focussed on daydreaming about being her.
So I had a really good time. I didn't want it to end. I want to see it again.
Andrew enjoyed it to, but the first thing he said was "Again they mixed up the storylines" and I got pretty mad... firstly, because he hasn't read enough X-men comics to REALLY know that. And I'd made such an effort to move past that - after the first movie, I KNEW this movie was going on it's own timeline, I mean, they've already started a new comic book in this X-Men Universe. As far as I was concerned, it was a moot point and didn't need to be brought to my attention again. Secondly, it reminded me, in an emotional sense, of countless movies I went to see with Alex, where afterwards all he did was rip them apart. Especially if I'd like them. It's like he was malicious, trying to ruin my good time. At least, that's how it felt. So when he said that, it reminded me of that, and I felt bad, and I got mad.
We talked about it, though, and he apologized, because he really did like the movie, it just was the first thing out of his mouth, probably because he wanted to discuss said changes with me.
It's all fine now.
When we got home we did our 1/3 workout (doing 1/3 the full work out every day except rest days is really working for me, btw), and then went to bed. So I didn't miss any working out or cardio or anything.
So, it's 10am. I have 8 hours left at work. And I REALLY WANT TO GO HOME.

Date: 2003-05-04 11:24 am (UTC)What scares me the most is that people here call that area "The Warzone". It's apparently fine during the day, though.
Thanks. :)

Date: 2003-05-04 03:25 pm (UTC)I'm so glad you saw the movie. I loved what they did with the characters, I loved the developing relationships, I loved the incredible grace with which their powers are portrayed, and I loved that I had both special knowledge about what was happening (and what's going to happen next time!) from reading the comic in the Chris Claremont era, and that the movie continually surprised me.
I want to see it again soon.

Date: 2003-05-04 03:38 pm (UTC)My schedule is all wonky this week. I've got Wednesday off and I'm working Friday ('til 9). Could we do a matinee? I could, um, drive and stuff. ;)

We can even maybe do something in the way of eating afterwards/beforehand?
