Feel the breeze
May. 11th, 2003 09:39 amI've been reading some really great stuff lately.
I just finished Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban. It's a really great post-apocalyptic book, written in the style of a people who has lost the skill of writing, and regained it... in their own way. I had to pay attention - much like Shakespeare, but it was worth it. I really enjoyed it.
I'm in the process of reading Carter Beats The Devil by Glen David Gold. It's a dramatic piece of fiction set in the early 1900s, about a magician of the day, Charlie Carter, and what happens there. I love it - Glen David Gold does some incredible character building, and I feel SO STRONGLY for Charlie Carter through his adventures, and even for some of the antagonists.
I know I'm not saying this well. i tend to gush instead of give concrete reasons to read something. I'm not a good reviewer - I talk with my emotions instead of my head. But if you're looking for something to read - read Carter Beats The Devil.
I'm also re-reading Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age. It's a good one. I read it awhile ago, picked it up for Andrew for Christmas, and forgot all about it. He's a fantastic author.
In other news, I'm at work again, as usual. My body feels like crap, and has all week. It's not performing normal body functions properly, I feel sluggish, I have a headache, I'm always tired but can't sleep properly... it sucks. As a result, I haven't been working out properly. I've been continuing the cardio - our walks, the bike rides, and etc - but not enough lifting.
I just don't have the energy for it.
Tomorrow I'm taking a day off working out. Hopefully it will help me get back in gear, and I'll be able to start up again on Tuesday, strong and motivated.
Also, my legs have started growing scales. Or something. It's just above the knees, and on the calves, on the inside of the legs. It's as if I had rug burn on them.
If it were on my inner thighs, I'd think my legs were rubbing together. But the calves?
I had a bath last night and my legs stung when I submerged them in the water. I loofahed and moisturized, and moisturized again this morning.
Hopefully, with a cycle of moisturizing, this will pass. I can only assume it's from the different climate here, because I've never had this happen before.
We thought it might be my leg pillow (to keep my lower back in alignment, I sleep on my side with a pillow between my knees), since it's old old old. So we switched it with our guest pillow (which is new), to see if that helps too.
Last night we walked to Walmart and bought a whole bunch of stuff for camping. Sleeping bags, rope, a cute little 3 quart pot, a little propane stove (one burner), a little frying pan, water bottles, an extra bike chain, a pump (for the tires) a water bottle holder (his bike already has one, but mine didn't), emergency rain ponchos, a tarp, a soft cooler, an axe, matches... and a bunch of other stuff I don't recall but that is sitting on our floor as I write.
This trip is so imminent, I am SO excited. We're going from May 26 to May 28, since I have Monday off for "Memorial Day". What the hell is Memorial Day, anyway? Anyway, we'll stay for 2 nights, I figure. Biking there will be hard - full packs, all uphill. But that's part of the accomplishment, and part of the fun. And biking home will be a BREEZE. As in, feel the breeze as we glide by, baby.
On Tuesday we're going to get the tent and a few other things, and we'll be almost ready to go.
Sweet.

Date: 2003-05-12 10:14 am (UTC)Also, I think I am going to try a leg-pillow. My backpain has been getting kinda wonky lately. But, I do not know if I sleep very long in one position, so it might be fruitless.
Re:
Date: 2003-05-12 10:24 am (UTC)Carter Beats the Devil was fanTASTic. It turns out that the magician Carter The Great was an actual guy in the early 1900s, which, because the story was so thrilling, I didn't know until I read the afterword.
