I've never done this before, but sometimes you have to take your rapidly beating heart into your hands and try something new:

My New Cover Letter

Who better to hire than a confirmed generalist who chooses to excel at everything she does?

A Jill Of All Trades, I have been a designer, a software developer, a tester, a team lead, technical support, an instructor, and even a writer of course books and user guides. I’ve smoothed interactions between developers and management, championed the cause of customers, and once even cozened $1000 out of coworkers to give to a new mother.

In my free time, I paint, I read voraciously, I take the occasional course, and I’m writing a book.

I’m constantly eager to broaden my knowledge and experience new challenges. I’ve worked in small, medium, and large companies, and I’ve found that a small company tends to have a dynamic environment that encourages people to branch out, work together, and expand their horizons, and that is the environment I'm searching for.

I’m currently living and working in the United States on a work permit, but I’m looking to return to Canada permanently in August. (I’m looking forward to coming home.) I happened onto your site through http://www.allvanjobs.com, and I am intrigued and excited about your company. Even your tag line “We believe that learning is fun, when done properly” resonates deeply with who I am.

Enclosed you’ll find my resume. If you or someone you know has been searching for an experienced, motivated, intelligent and creative employee who will get the job done (no matter what it is!), feel free to contact me. I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
Lisa

I sent that to a small company in Vancouver today. They weren't looking for anyone in specific, but who knows - maybe I'll get some feedback!

According to the scale, I've lost another pound. That does NOT suck. That means in one more pound, I'll have lost 20!!!

That rocks.

Last night's dinner was grilled teriyaki salmon with 2 ears of corn each. MmmmmmMMMm. For dessert (which we don't usually have) I made a fruit salad out of mango, kiwi, and strawberries. It was delicious.

(As an aside - I HATE citrus in fruit salad. HATE IT. CITRUS DOES NOT BELONG IN FRUIT SALAD)

So we could have the teriyaki grilled salmon, a coworker drove me to Wild Oats during work so I could pick up some teriyaki sauce. I also picked up a 6 pack of beer for [profile] caric, for when he came over.

This is noteworthy for 2 reasons:

1) I put the beer in my backpack and took the bus home. I felt as if I were hiding my white trash-ness by carrying concealed beer. I mean, don't all the trashy kids carry beer on the bus?

2) Rob didn't drink all the beer, so now I HAVE to make beer battered fish and onion rings. Andrew was very adorable when he asked, and he is impossible to say no to. This is the recipe I made for him for his birthday, which he loved, and has wanted since.

So Rob came over, we had a GREAT time hanging out and chatting. He left around 11. I had a great time. Just hanging out can be so much fun, and people don't seem to do that any more... there always has to be some THING that we DO. I prefer just hanging. Well, sometimes.

I'm in a pretty good mood.

Yummy.

Oooooh, beer-battered fish and onion rings. Would you share the recipe? I've wanted to try doing something like that for a while. Or, well, have my mother try something like that. I've sorta been put off frying things since last year. Tc:

great cover letter!!

felt as if I were hiding my white trash-ness by carrying concealed beer

After years of concealment, I've just decided that my white-trash heratige can't be shed. I've learned to cope with it, and I'm sometimes even proud of it. :)

I agree with you. I have my proud to be trash moments too.

After all, I don't know anyone else who has grandparents that have a trailer as a summer home. A trailer that's parked on my uncle's lawn, of course. :D

I like the cover letter. It's interesting enough to grab your attention, but not weird enough to turn off an overly-stuffy HR person, I think. And I'm totally with you on the citrus thing.
