Well, I'm back.
The vacation was GOOD. We had a great time.
We picked up the rental car on Monday morning, and drove to Roswell, where we saw a bunch of cheesy alien things, then drove on to Carlsbad, where we found a cheap motel (this is me, flying by the seat of my pants! And it was FUN!), and had a nap, which I badly needed after the insomnia of the night before.
That night, we went to the drive-in to see Terminator 3. It was mucho fun, because it was cheap, and the snack bar was ALSO cheap, and we got all sorts of food for $10, and then we got back to the car JUST in time for a thunderstorm. It was so wonderful to sit in this big open space (the drive in lot) and watch the lightning and rain. It was beautiful.
And, as New Mexico is wont to do, the rain cleared up JUST in time for the movie to start.
And the movie was fun - it was better than I expected. And who knew that Claire Danes was in it? I mean, heLLO!!! I like Claire Danes. And she has definitely grown up.
So that was Monday.
Tuesday we drove to the Caverns and hiked around in those beautiful caves for a couple of hours. We took a whole bunch of great pictures of stalagtites and stalagmites. It was like a fairy-land. Pieces of it were like a very SCARY fairy-land. It was awesome. I'm so glad we went.
And then we drove back to Albuquerque, watching the huge dust devils beside the road as we went, and got home just in time to quickly get ready for our fancy french dinner.
I had 20 minutes, or something like that. I put my hair up, threw some shiny hair things in my hair, put on a necklace, and threw on my dress, and yet, when Andrew saw me, he said I looked "stunning".
Stunning!
Who'da thought.
He even took pictures of me to prove it. I must admit, one of the photos looks kinda sexy.
So we drove to the french place, and he had salmon in a champagne sauce, and I had duck in madeira sauce. They were both quite tasty. And for dessert he had the lime creme brulee, and I had this crepe with ice cream and chocolate and nutella. MMmmmmmMMMmm.
(As an aside, the first time I ever had Nutella was when I went to Paris. It was not allowed in my house when I was growing up)
Wednesday we went to the zoo, which was fun but (as always) raised those issues I have with zoos. Yes, they're good for protecting endangered species, but... is that monkey happy? Is there enough space for that meerkat? Are they treated well? Does it feel like jail to them?
I much prefer places with wide wide wide open spaces for the animals, it assuages my guilt just a wee bit.
But we had fun!
Lunch was delicious vegan Indian food, then we went back home and I had a nap and prepared for my phone interview.
Which went well, and I have another interview with the two team leads of the project (who are BOTH FEMALE, which is SO AWESOME!) this tuesday. So think good thoughts for me!! Please please!!
The job is a 6 month contract with a possibility of renewal for another 6 months. It's for $25/hr, and once I get in with the company they will keep throwing contracts at me when they have them. They sent me two quizzes, which I completed and sent back, and hopefully this is the ONE.
We got a letter good for a free movie for two, so after my interview we went to Red Lobster (mmmm, tempura battered crab), and then to see Tomb Raider. Which was good... in an action movie ignore the plot kinda way. I actually may have liked the first one better. But we had fun. We had a lot of fun!
Thursday morning we brought back the car, and Thursday and Friday we basically just relaxed around the house. I'd swear we did SOMETHING, but I don't recall what the hell it was. There was definitely the lazing.
We DID go to a garage sale on Friday, and I found a kitchen scale for $1 (so I can weigh my servings and whatnot), and we found a great little table for $4. It's hot pink, so we'll need to paint it, but it's a great height and a nice shape, so it was a total score.
We ALSO went to the used bookstore by our house (easily the BEST used bookstore I've ever been to) to pick up some books, and as I was looking through the shelves, I happened to glance at one and found....
This requires a bit of back story:
When I was 12, we were just about to move from one city to another. We stopped off at the library (an AWESOME library - one of my favorites, it had a wooden loft area for the kids books, and a HUGE reading section with bean bag chairs) and I found a book I wanted to read, but we didn't have time for me to sit and read it, and I couldn't take it out, because we were moving.
So I decided to memorize the title and author, and I would just have to get it at the library in the new city, that's all. So I memorized it. And as sometimes happens when you tell yourself to remember something, it sticks with you forever.
Well, it was MINDHOPPER by James Johnson.
And I NEVER FOUND IT AGAIN. I'm 29 now, so that was 17 years ago.
So when we were in the bookstore on Friday, guess what I happened to see when I glanced at one of the shelves??
Yep, it was Lord of the....
Oh, ok, you got me. It was Mindhopper.
So Friday night I raced through that book like nobody's business. There's nothing special about it, but I'm just glad I got to finally read it. I mean, I HAD to. Had to had to.
That's about it. My week was good. I have 17 work days left including this one, before I'm done here. We've given our notice to our landlord... and that's about it!
Except, of course, that Andrew did get the bigger soldier part, and he starts filming today. My cute little soldier boy. He's adorable. We got to see the dailies from yesterday, and they were REALLY GOOD! I can't wait to see this movie all done. Hell, I can't wait to see tonight's dailies with Andrew in them.
